Eli Bell is the only son of a police chief inspector and a forensic scientist. He's grown up wonky in a world that only deals with the straight and narrow -- and his new boyfriend isn't helping.

Rob Hawkes is six feet of muscle, tattoos, and arrest warrants. A career criminal and a former tenant of Her Majesty's Prison Service, he'd rather hit Eli's parents than sit down to dinner with them. One wrong move, and Rob could destroy Eli -- and his family -- without a second thought.

But this isn't what it looks like.

Rob's not in control here -- and Eli's the one to blame.

What a truly amazing book. Immediately upon meeting Rob I instinctually knew I was going to love him. Abrasively raw with a hairpin trigger, brutally honest and sardonic to his core; he was the perfect bad boy. Fiercely protective and loyal to those he loves: his softer side. He loves as hard as he hates which is easily seen in his relationship with his brother, all the physical pain he took when they were kids so Danny didn't have to, and his inability to interact with Eli's parents in any type of civility. The tender of him side who craves the love, affection, and reassurance that only Eli can give.

Then we have Eli. I had no doubt I would love him in a completely different way. The mama bear inside of me wanted to beat his parents just as badly as Rob did. Even though they had accepted Eli in their own way they couldn't find it in themselves to support him in the way that common sense says parents should. That right there showed me a tiny glimpse of which way it can go for so many people trying to make others understand that they were born with an outside that didn't match their inside. As parents who are supposed love their children unconditionally, even if they don't understand them, should do whatever they can to support them.

We have Rob who simply says, I don't understand but whatever makes you happy you should do. Danny, who one would believe to be too ignorant to even try to accept Eli, immediately wants to carve up the person who hurt Eli says the same thing. Of course, in true Danny fashion, asks all the questions we expect him to. The two people anyone would believe to react in the complete opposite just accepted Eli and that was that.

In a world where anyone would look at Rob and Eli and say no way is that going to happen we see it happen as a relationship should. They support and defend each other without even thinking about it. To them they make sense and no one else matters.

This is the first book I've read of this author and I assure you it won't be the last. His writing is impeccable, non condescending and heart warming, thought provoking and insightful. I wonder how much of these characters are the author himself. I really wasn't ready to be done with them.

What It Looks Like edition by Matthew J Metzger Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I adored this story. Not only did Matthew bring Eli and Rob into my life in the most refreshing way possible- realistic, gritty and no soft soaping - he also told us a story about how young transmen feel, how they develop a relationship and some of the issues they face. Issues that are unique. he transitioning process must be so damn hard, and in this story, it really gave me some insights into the difficulties they face. It was a stunning portrayal of real life without the softeners. Rob is foul mouthed and a hard case, a career criminal trying to turn his life around. Yet beneath his tough tattooed exterior beats the heart of a good man, and one who truly loves deeply and will go to any lengths to protect Eli. Eli is complicated as hell, feisty and torn between wanting his family- and Rob. He's tougher than he looks, with a brain as sharp as a razor and the two things he knows he wants is Rob and to fully transition. It's a wonderfully crafted tale of family drama, young love, the difficult dynamics of two men coming to terms with each other, and the absolute truth that you should not judge a book by its cover. Well done to this author for such a brilliantly entertaining and absorbing read. I shall certainly be reading the others I have of his on my as soon as possible.
Eli is the son of a policeman and a forensic scientist. His parents clearly care for him, perhaps a little too much, but don't really understand what the young man is going through. They certainly don't understand Eli's choice in boyfriends. Rob is almost the exact opposite of Eli. Abused as a child, Rob is very much from the wrong side of the tracks. He has had several run-ins with the law, and even spent a few years in prison. But what Rob does to Eli, as well as what Eli does for Rob, are things almost nobody would understand.

“What It Looks Like” is a very interesting book, full of surprises, and that means it's going to be difficult to review without giving away a few clues. Consider yourself warned.

This is a very character driven story, and many of the surprises come from the characters themselves, rather than twists and turns in the plot, although there are a few of those. We only begin to learn just how difficult life has been for Eli about a third of the way through the book. His struggle to define himself colors much of the rest of the book and provides a lot of, although not all, the drama.

Rob's past holds fewer surprises, but he is no less complex a character. In essence, both men struggle against a world that makes too many assumptions based on outward appearances. Their relationship is not what it may seem, on many levels. One small unexpected aspect of their relationship is their taste for kink, although even in this their play doesn't conform to common portrayals and expectations.

“What It Looks Like” is a very different kind of romance; one that might make you think — about your own reactions to it, if nothing else. While it might follow a very common story arc, there are still a number of surprises along the way.
